Michael Ruggeri

Agriculture and rural development Project Executive at Landell Mills

I have worked at the interface of sustainable development and conservation with a range of organisations, from FAO to private consulting companies. As part of my academic studies and professional experience, I have analysed human-wildlife conflicts and mitigation measures that could concurrently contribute to income generation for implementing communities (e.g. elephant-deterring chilling fences in Southern Africa). Similarly, over my career, I had the chance to explore climate change and ecosystem services interactions and how these might affect species interactions due to migrations, changes in distribution and similar phenomena.

Currently, I am working for a private consulting company in the sectors of agriculture and rural development, being responsible for the management and implementation of projects and the preparation of technical studies in the livestock and farming sectors in a range of countries. This also involves looking at potential solutions for reducing human-wildlife conflicts among farming communities.

Broadly speaking, I have an interest in the concept of rewilding, public perceptions of reintroductions and the reduction of attritions between conservation interventions and local livelihoods, with a focus on agriculture.
