IUCN/SSC CTSG HWIWG: Inclusivity in Conservation Translocation practice 10th and 17th September 2024

The HWIWG invites you to a new series of talks to discuss inclusivity and decolonising approaches in conservation translocation practice.  Siân Waters and Monica Engel, who are part of our core group, have vast experience in CT and relate this to their own case studies of inclusive practice.

International agreements to guide the protection of biodiversity (such as the UN Convention on Biological Diversity) are progressively acknowledging the active role of indigenous and traditional communities in protecting and managing wildlife.  There is evidence that biodiversity thrives in the 25% of land owned/managed by these communities globally, making these key partners in strategies to address the extinction crisis. We will discuss opportunities and approaches that conservation translocations may use to incorporate indigenous and traditional communities' voices into project planning, development and execution.
